4:00-5:00pm - Family Yoga

with Jenny Pietzsch

Family Yoga is so AWESOME! In a world where parents and children are so busy, family yoga provides a wonderful place to spend healthy and happy, quality time together. No mobile phones, no iPads or TV, no other duties…it’s just you and your children. You might be surprised, but that does not happen often in the 21st century. Family is so important, and time and care are needed to nurture it and make it work; yoga is perfect for this! Children, parents, and even grandparents get to enjoy practicing yoga together and strengthen their bonds while they support each other and have fun.

7:00-8:30pm - Candlelight Restorative Yoga and Reiki

with Robyn Phillips, Amie Beniuk, Jenny Pietzsch and Amena McKay

Restorative yoga is for everybody and every body - a class suitable for beginners to seasoned practitioners. We will open practice with a guided meditation followed by a supine restorative posture intended to slow the nervous system and enhance our awareness of the mind-body connection. A slow and mindful hatha flow will follow before making our way back down to the mat for a restorative posture sequence. Restorative postures are generally held for 5 minutes or longer and are founded on the principle of support. The systematic and intentional use of many props and supports cues the body to relax thus allowing the expression of our individual anatomical alignment to surface. Through this practice one may experience profound relaxation, reduced stress and anxiety, and a strong union between the body, mind and emotional center.

Reiki is a healing technique, which utilizes universal energy to boost the body's natural healing processes. This ancient technique helps to restore the client's physical, mental, and emotional well being. The Practitioner uses a light touch to channel and circulate healing energy. The client can expect to feel a deep sense of relaxation throughout the session, and energetically rejuvenated upon session conclusion.

During this combined class,  Reiki will be offered to the group and also to each yogi individually. During restorative postures individuals will receive individualized Reiki treatments (5-10 minutes a person rotated throughout the class). Reiki will also be provided to the group as a whole during beginning meditation and ending Savasana. It is important to note that application of Reiki is based on the energetic needs of the group and individual; Amie will therefore be tailoring the technique to the needs of the group and client.

with Tammy Fyith

How do you take care of your spine?  Explore this accessible yoga class to increase fluidity, flexibility and mobility of the spine by combining mindful breathing with conscious movement.  We will discover ways to encourage and sustain a strong, supple spine through healthy alignment, building stability throughout the body, and creating elongation and space for energy to flow.  A strong spine is vital in connecting all movement, ensuring that we function with energy, strength and with a wider range of movement.   Allow the practice of yoga to teach you to slow down, connect and become aware of your own potential.  See you on your mats.

2:30-4:00pm - Introduction to American Tribal Belly Dancing

with Christa MacNevin

This introductory workshop will provide a technical breakdown and drilling of the movements that compose the basic building blocks found in all styles of belly dance. The basic vocabulary of slow and fast movements, combinations, cues, and formations of American Tribal Style (ATS®) Belly Dance will be introduced. In each class, students will continue to learn new dance vocabulary with cues, work on developing good core strength and dance posture, review previous class materials, as well as practice the concepts of group-synchronized dancing.

Workshop is open to everyone – regardless of your previous dance/movement background, current fitness level, shape, age (16+), height, favourite animal, etc. Workshop is designed for the terrified beginner with no experience with dance, and those with two left feet or the rhythmically-challenged are most welcome! It offers a safe and fun dance form that develops strength, posture, and confidence in movement. Let’s get shimmying!

But, what is American Tribal Style (ATS®) Belly Dance anyways?

American Tribal Style (ATS®) Belly Dance is a modern style of dance that originated in San Francisco in the early 1980s influenced by folk dances from the Middle East, North Africa, India, and Eastern Europe. It is a group-synchronized, improvisational style of belly dance that relies on a vocabulary of cues, transitions, and combinations to form a cohesive dance – without choreography. Though it is a modern dance, the feeling is earthy and connected, with vibrant costuming, music, use of finger cymbals, strong and elegant movements, and dynamic teamwork within the tribe of dancers. Knowledge of the dance vocabulary allows ATS® dancers from all over the world to dance together in sync, even if they have not danced with each other before.

4:30-6:00pm -Skills and Drills: A Foundation for Inversions

with Robyn Elizabeth Phillips

Inversions are a freaking blast! But let’s be honest guys, they’re intimidating and anxiety inducing for most adults! They’re one of the most underrated strength training activities for one simple reason – so many people believe that they can’t do them! ! Picture me crossing my arms and yelling nahhhh – you absolutely can start your headstand, forearm stand, and handstand journey today! Inverting doesn’t have to be a scary thing if we start by creating a foundation for the practice; put the building blocks in place to make going upside down safe and enjoyable! This workshop is  less about actually inverting and more about learning skills and drills intended to strengthen and limber the body in all the right places to support your body and mind while inverting – it’s about giving you the confidence needed to start practicing inversions!

This workshop will begin with anatomical basics of inversions, we’ll talk about and move through a variety of postural exercises that focus on skeletal alignment and muscular engagement for inversions, all while right side up. Students will then move through a flexibility focused yoga sequence concentrated on shoulder flexion, hip movement, spinal mobility, and pelvic stabilization. Gear up for some serious core and arm work in the next section -  a strength based flow will teach students the importance of core engagement, balancing out activation of the quads, hamstrings and adductors, and strengthening the wrists, arms and shoulders in a variety of positions. We’ll then discuss entry, exit and balance strategies, and what to expect in terms of control while upside down. When all is said and done you’ll have the tools and techniques needed to start working towards a headstand, forearm stand, and/or handstand! After completion of the workshop, should students choose to, there will be an open 15 minutes for students to practice going upside down in a supported environment complete with teacher spots and acro padding!

6:30-8:00pm - Yoga Nidra

with Tammy Fyith

Yoga Nidra is a powerful yoga meditation technique that promotes deep rest and relaxation.  The practice restores vitality as you recharge and rejuvenate, creating mental peace, calm and a gateway to journey inwards.  Yoga Nidra releases blocked energy that is trapped within the body and mind, promoting balance and harmony within, releasing stress and tension and awakening higher consciousness.   Practiced lying down supported in savasana, Yoga Nidra involves focusing on a Sankalpa (an intention or deep resolve that we wish to manifest in any area of our life), breath awareness, a guided body scan releasing the physical body of tension and quieting the brain.  It allows for an opportunity to connect with the subtle and emotional body, gaining a heightened sense of self-awareness.  Yoga Nidra is an easy and effective way to create a bridge between conscious awareness and our subconscious mind, using it as a tool for mining the strengths and the potential hidden within you.  Yoga Nidra offers a space to explore what you need in the moment, as well as an opportunity to work on releasing long held emotions and tensions.  Gift yourself this practice of self- care and wellness … see you on your mat.
